Surgeons and oncologists at the Laser Spine Institute in Alamogordo, NM, have recently started using a new treatment option for liver cancer patients – radioembolization with yttrium-90 microspheres (Y-92 microspheres). In this procedure, TARE or transarterial radioembolization, Y-92 microspheres are delivered directly to the tumor site via interventional radiology and serve as radioactive seeds that destroy the cancerous tissue while leaving the healthy tissue intact. The result? Fewer complications and greater control over pain.
What is radioembolization with Y-92 microspheres?
Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) is an increasingly popular therapy for both primary and secondary liver malignancies. TARE entails delivery of β-particle brachytherapy and embolization of the tumor vasculature. The radiation source used is a mixture of yttrium 92microspheres with a range and half-life of 6 hours.

How effective is this treatment option?
Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) with yttrium 92microspheres is an increasingly popular therapy for both primary and secondary liver malignancies. TARE entails delivery of β-particle brachytherapy and embolization of the tumor vasculature. It may be used as a treatment option if other treatments have failed or are not an option.
What are the side effects associated with this treatment?
Side effects of radioembolization 92 are generally well tolerated but include gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea and vomiting. Side effects may also include fatigue, shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing, skin problems such as eczema or psoriasis, weight loss, anemia, and bleeding. Radioembolization is not considered a cure for liver cancer; however, it can be used as a treatment option to help slow the progression of some types of tumors.
How much does this treatment option cost?
The cost of the TARE procedure depends on whether it is a first-time or repeat treatment and if you have Medicare or private insurance. For example, a first-time treatment costs about $8,000 to $10,000 and a repeat treatment can cost about $4,500 to $7,500.
